Consumption data

We have three consumption data services available to help you and your customer understand water usage. If your customer has a digital meter installed we can offer a digital meter reading service tailored to the digital equipment. Where we have a data logger in place, we can provide you with historical consumption data for your customer’s water usage as well as a reoccurring data service that will provide consumption data on a monthly basis. Where an older meter is installed on your customer’s premises you can also ask us for consent to fit your own logging device to monitor consumption.

Providing digital meter data

We now install digital meters for all new or replacement meter requests. They’re read by radio communications, which enables us to provide a digital meter data service. If the digital meter is within our fixed network coverage area, we can provide the service without any extra installation. If the meter is outside this area, you’ll need to fit a local-area fixed network device to collect data. We’ll assess the location of the meter when you submit the service request form and let you know what action we need to take.

All data will be provided in compliance with data protection laws and you will need permission from the customer to collect data. As a reminder to you, you must also comply with all relevant data protection legislation and codes of practice, and if you’re aware of a breach of legislation you must advise us immediately. Providing consumption data from our loggers

You can ask us to provide data for your customer’s premises on a monthly basis or historical data for a particular time period. A letter of consent from your customer must be submitted at the time of raising your request. We’ll charge for these services so please refer to our wholesale tariff document for full details.

Installing your own data logger

If you have permission from your customer you can ask us for consent to attach your own consumption monitoring equipment to one of our meters. We can help you understand the requirements and, if it’s possible, fit the logger. You’ll need to make sure that the equipment does not affect our existing equipment in any way.  Please use our Data Logger Installation Guidance to help you understand what is needed. This service is not available where a digital meter has been installed.

If you’re unable to fit your own logging equipment, we may be able to provide you with a consumption data service or, alternatively, you may need to install a private sub-meter.

Fitting splitters for data loggers

If you’re fitting a data logger to our meter and it needs a splitter, you can ask us to install the splitter equipment for you. Depending on what’s involved, we’ll either visit your customer to fit the splitter or arrange a site survey to check what’s needed. When the splitter has been fitted, we’ll let you know that the work has been completed.
